Lokomotiv in the first match of Varnakov in the KHL since October 2021 beat Vityaz
MOSCOW, 24 Jan – Yaroslavl “Locomotive” defeated the suburban “Vityaz” in the match of the regular season of the Continental Hockey League (KHL).

The meeting in Yaroslavl ended with the score 3:1 (2:0, 0:0, 1:1) in favor of the hosts. As part of the winners, goals were scored by Alexander Polunin (5th minute), Maxim Shalunov (20) and Artur Kayumov (60). Ivan Yezhov scored for the guests (58).
The debut match for the railroad workers was held by striker Maxim Varnakov. The 37-year-old hockey player signed a contract with Lokomotiv at the end of December, this meeting was his first since October 2021, then he represented Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo. He became the 25th player to play in all 15 KHL seasons. Now he has 749 league games and 408 points (218 goals and 190 assists).
Vityaz forward Stepan Starkov played his 200th game in the KHL.
Lokomotiv, having scored 74 points in 56 matches, climbed to second place in the standings of the Western Conference, the Moscow Region club is sixth with 60 points in 54 meetings.
In the next match, on January 27, Yaroslavl will host St. Petersburg’s SKA, which is leading in the West, and Vityaz will play away on January 26 against the last-going Sochi.
