The victory was Murray’s 50th at the Australian Open and the first since 2017 over a top 20 player at a Grand Slam tournament. The 35-year-old Briton has played five times in the final of the tournament in Melbourne. He has also won Wimbledon twice and the US Open once. In the second round he will face the winner of the match between Australian Tanasi Kokkinakis and Italian Fabio Fognini.
The Australian Open takes place in Melbourne and ends on January 29th. The current winner of the tournament is Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the 2022 final.
