Telegraaf: Ex-football player Overmars suffered irreparable heart damage after a stroke

MOSCOW, 19 Jan – Former Dutch international Marc Overmars has suffered irreparable heart damage after suffering a cardiac arrest.
In late December, Overmars felt unwell and was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. On Thursday it became known that the 49-year-old former footballer returned to work as technical director at the Belgian side Antwerp.
However, according to a source, Overmars’ condition is worse than originally reported. His heart can only pump 30% of its normal volume, and part of his heart muscle is not functioning. It is noted that Overmars will have a long recovery before he can fully return to his work duties.
Overmars has been with Antwerp since March 2022. Overmars became a three-time Dutch champion and Champions League winner with Ajax, a champion and FA Cup winner with Arsenal. With the Netherlands national team, Overmars twice became the bronze medalist of the European Championships.
