Sport.pl: ex-portugal national team coach Santos will lead the Polish football team
MOSCOW, 23 Jan – Portuguese specialist Fernando Santos will be appointed as head coach of the Polish national football team, reports Sport.pl.
According to the source, Santos arrived in Warsaw on Monday. Already on Tuesday, the President of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) Cesare Kulesza will present the 68-year-old specialist as the new head coach of the national team.
At the end of December, PZPN decided not to renew the contract of Poland head coach Czesław Mihniewicz, which expired on December 31st, after a “thorough analysis” of his work. Under the leadership of Mikhnevich, the Poles reached the 1/8 finals of the World Cup in Qatar.
Santos has led the Portuguese national team since 2014 and won the European Championship (2016) and the UEFA Nations League (2019) with the team. He left his post after the World Cup in Qatar, where the Portuguese team lost in the 1/4 finals to Morocco. Prior to that, the Portuguese coached the Greek national team for four years (2010-2014). At club level, he has worked with Sporting Lisbon and Benfica, Porto, and also led the Greek clubs AEK, Panathinaikos and PAOK.
