With several overseas stars opting out and key players sidelined by injuries, franchises are scrambling to adapt. Here are the three major replacements announced for IPL 2025, addressing the absence of Lockie Ferguson, Jos Buttler, and Mayank Yadav, along with insights into the impact on their respective teams.

1. Kyle Jamieson Replaces Lockie Ferguson at Punjab Kings

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, acquired by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for ₹2 crore, has been ruled out of IPL 2025 due to a hamstring injury sustained during UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20).

Stepping in is compatriot Kyle Jamieson, signed at his base price of ₹75 lakh from Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP). Jamieson, a tall right-arm pacer known for his bounce and seam movement, brings experience from 13 IPL matches with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he took 10 wickets.

His inclusion strengthens PBKS’s pace attack led by Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen as they aim for a playoff berth. However, replacing Ferguson’s express pace and death-bowling expertise will be a challenge for Jamieson, who is returning from his own injury concerns.

2. Kusal Mendis Replaces Jos Buttler at Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans (GT) face a massive blow with England’s Jos Buttler, a key top-order batter and wicketkeeper, opting out of IPL 2025 playoffs starting May 26 to focus on national commitments.

Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis, a dynamic batter and keeper, has been signed as his replacement for ₹1 crore. Mendis, with 3,000+ runs in T20s and a strike rate above 130, offers versatility but lacks Buttler’s proven IPL pedigree, where the latter has scored 3,582 runs at a strike rate of 147.53.

GT’s top order, featuring Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, relies heavily on Buttler’s explosive starts, and his absence could disrupt their balance.

Mendis, who has played 10 IPL matches for Punjab Kings, must step up to fill the void, especially in high-pressure playoff games. This swap is a gamble for GT, given Buttler’s match-winning ability.

3. William O’Rourke Replaces Mayank Yadav at Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have been hit hard by the injury to their star pacer Mayank Yadav, who has been ruled out of IPL 2025 with a recurring lumbar stress injury.

22-year-old, known for clocking speeds above 150 kmph, played only two matches this season before succumbing to fitness issues, a pattern seen in his 2024 IPL stint and brief India career.

New Zealand’s William O’Rourke, a 6’4” fast bowler with 11 wickets in five T20Is, joins LSG as Yadav’s replacement for ₹75 lakh. O’Rourke’s raw pace and bounce make him a promising addition, but his inexperience in T20 leagues and lack of IPL exposure pose risks.

LSG, already dealing with injuries to Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, and Akash Deep, have named Shardul Thakur and Shivam Mavi as potential stand-ins, but O’Rourke’s signing aims to fill the void left by Yadav’s fiery pace. The recurring injuries to Yadav, alongside similar issues with Umran Malik, raise questions about India’s fast-bowling management at National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Challenges for IPL 2025

Absence of reserve days in IPL 2025, a decision made to accommodate a tight schedule ending May 25, has left no buffer for rain-affected matches, adding pressure on franchises already navigating player absences.

The withdrawal of foreign players like Buttler, alongside injuries to stars like Ferguson and Yadav, has forced teams to rely on less experienced replacements, potentially impacting competitive balance. Posts on X reflect fan frustration, with one user stating, “Mayank Yadav’s injuries are heartbreaking.

NCA needs to sort this out!” BCCI’s expanded replacement window, allowing changes until 12th league match, provides flexibility, but the lack of retention eligibility for temporary signings post-suspension complicates long-term planning.

Impact on Franchises

  • Punjab Kings: Jamieson’s signing bolsters their bowling, but Ferguson’s absence weakens their death overs. PBKS must leverage Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis to compensate.
  • Gujarat Titans: Losing Buttler is a major setback. Mendis’s inclusion tests GT’s depth, with Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan needing to lead the charge.
  • Lucknow Super Giants: Yadav’s exit dims LSG’s pace attack. O’Rourke’s raw talent offers hope, but Rishabh Pant’s side will rely on spinners like Ravi Bishnoi to stay competitive.

As IPL 2025 resumes post-suspension due to India-Pakistan border tensions, the final phase, starting May 17 with RCB vs. KKR, promises intense competition despite these disruptions. Franchises must adapt swiftly to these changes to keep their playoff hopes alive.
