showed incredible promise and had solid rookie season—but then it all cut short. What really happened?

Players from around world dream of playing in NBA. For many it’s the ultimate goal. So when a 21-year-old who signed a four-year, million contract, suddenly quits basketball, it stands out. Why did AJ Griffin retire and what’s behind this unexpected move?

AJ has been a rising star since his school years. Coming from a sports family—his father, Adrian Griffin, a former NBA player and now coach of the Milwaukee Bucks—AJ was always poised for success.

After high school he played for Duke University and rated as a five-star prospect. Expectations were high for him, and his first-round selection in the 2022 NBA draft (16th overall by the Atlanta Hawks) only confirmed his potential.

In his rookie season Griffin impressed fans with an average of 8.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. He shot 46.5% from field and 39% from three-point range earning him key moments in overtime games that fans still remember.

But instead of progressing in his second season, his performance declined. He played only 20 games compared to 72 year before, and his stats dropped to just 2.4 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. There were no reports of injuries, so the reasons for his absence remained unclear.

Last season, Griffin briefly addressed the situation. “I’m glad to be back. The team supported me when I took a break for personal reasons, but I won’t go into details,” he said.

That season had been hard for him. His nephew passed away in June 2023, and it was a deep loss for Griffin and his family. AJ, who had always turned to religion for comfort, seemed to rely on his faith even more.

In 2024, AJ was traded to the Houston Rockets, and many thought this fresh start could revive his career. He played five games in Summer League averaging 11.6 points and 3.0 rebounds.

But then came the unexpected news: Griffin wanted to retire from professional sports. Fans speculated whether his decision was permanent or a break, but Griffin soon clarified on his YouTube channel.

“I’m leaving basketball to follow Jesus. Giving up the game will allow me to serve the Lord fully. I thought basketball was my purpose, but when I found God, He showed me we’re here to glorify Him,” Griffin explained.

Both parties agreed to a buyout and Griffin now steps into a new phase of life. What he plans to do remains unclear. His statement about God left things open-ended, but it’s likely AJ has thought it all through. In two NBA seasons, he earned over $7.2 million which should help him as he embarks on this next chapter. Let’s wish him all the best!
