MOSCOW, 27 Jul – Afghan-born cyclist Masoma Ali Zada has been named to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, according to the organization’s website.
She became the first representative of the refugee team in the IOC Athletes’ Commission.
Also new members of the commission were seven-time Olympic champion American runner Allison Felix, two-time Olympic champion British triathlete Alistair Brownlee and Canadian sprinter Oluseyi Smith.
The IOC Athletes’ Commission has a maximum of 23 members, of which 12 (majority) are directly elected by athletes through elections during the Olympic Games. In August 2021, Russian two-time Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva lost the election to chair the IOC athletes.
