MOSCOW, 20 Jul – The World Boxing Association (WBA) has ordered WBA Super middleweight title holder Gennady Golovkin from Kazakhstan to defend his belt against Cuban Erislandi Lara, who owns the organization’s belt with the Regular prefix, Boxing Scene reports.
On September 17, Golovkin will fight the undisputed world champion Mexican Saul Alvarez for the WBA, World Boxing Organization (WBO), World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight titles. If he wins, the Kazakhstani will have five days to notify the WBA which division he wants to keep the belts in. If Golovkin decides to stay at middleweight, he will have 120 days to make a mandatory defense against Lara. If he gives up the title, the Cuban will automatically become the owner of the WBA Super belt.
Golovkin is 40 years old. He won 42 victories (37 by knockout), suffered one defeat and ended one fight in a draw. The 39-year-old Lara has 29 wins (17 by knockout), three losses and three draws.
