Background: Brendon McCullum, former New Zealand captain, took over as England‘s Test team coach in May 2022. Alongside captain Ben Stokes, he introduced the dynamic “buzzball” style of play, which has significantly impacted Test cricket.
Following the resignation of Matthew Mott, who stepped down on July 30 after England failed to retain the ODI and T20 World Cup titles, McCullum has been appointed as the head coach for England’s white-ball teams. This decision was confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
McCullum will begin his new role in January 2025, with his contract extending until the end of 2027. He will start ahead of England’s tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy.
Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim coach for England’s white-ball series against Australia and the West Indies until McCullum takes over.

McCullum expressed excitement about his expanded responsibilities and looks forward to working with captain Jos Buttler and Director of Cricket Rob Key.

Before McCullum’s appointment, notable figures like Andrew Flintoff, Kumar Sangakkara, and Jonathan Trott considered for the role. Sangakkara showed interest but did not receive an official offer.
