Hands for Cherchesov in the Champions League. Can he play Kyiv and Golovin?
Among the potential rivals is Khaikin’s team.
“Ferencvaros” Stanislav Cherchesov successfully started in the Champions League qualification. In the first round, the champion of Hungary confidently passed the Kazakh “Tobol”. The first match ended without goals, and a week later, Ferencvaros defeated the opponent in his field with a score of 5:1. But to get into the main draw of the tournament, the Cherchesov team will have to overcome three more rounds of selection.

Who will Ferencvaros play now?
In the second qualifying round, the Hungarian club will meet with Slovan (the matches will take place on July 20 and 27). This team is coached by Vladimir Weiss, who once worked with Saturn. Before signing a contract with Slovan, the specialist led the Georgian national team for four years. The return to the Slovak league was successful for Weiss – he led the team to victory in the championship.
Vladimir Weiss Sr.
Slovan has an experienced midfielder Juraj Kutska. The 35-year-old football player has extensive experience of playing in the Italian Serie A (Genoa, Milan, Parma) and 90 matches in the Slovakian national team. Kutska went to one World Championship and two European Championships. By the way, he made his debut in the national team under the guidance of the current Slovan coach. Vladimir Weiss Jr. plays with the captain’s armband in the Slovak club. The son of the head coach at various times played in Spain, Scotland, Italy, Greece. It was his goal with a direct kick from a corner in overtime that brought Slovan the final victory in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.
Last season, the Slovak club stumbled just in the second round of the Champions League qualification. The Weiss team lost on aggregate to Young Boys (0:0, 2:3), and then did not qualify for the group in the Europa League. In the final qualifying round, Slovan failed to cope with Olympiacos (0:3, 2:2). The Slovak club was in the group stage of the Conference League, but took only third place in the quartet with Copenhagen, PAOK and Lincoln Red Imps.

Will Cherchesov’s team meet with Golovin or Khaikin?
If Ferencváros beats Slovan, they will be in the third qualifying round. The draw for this stage took place on July 18, and the matches will take place in the first half of August. From this round, Monaco will enter the fight for a place in the main draw of the Champions League, where midfielder of the Russian national team Alexander Golovin plays. However, Ferencváros will under no circumstances face the French team before the group stage. The fact is that the Hungarian team follows the so-called path of champions, and Monaco follows the path of league representatives. If Ferencvaros advances to the third round, they will face the winner of the Qarabag-Zurich pair.

Another Russian is playing in the Champions League qualification – Bodø-Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Khaikin. The champion of Norway, not without difficulty, passed KI Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands (3:0, 1:3) and will now play with the Northern Irish Linfield. Bodø-Glimt, like Ferencváros, follows the same path. If the champions of Hungary and Norway overcome the next qualifying barrier, they will be among the unseeded teams, therefore, they will not play each other in the third round. Bodø-Glimt will face either Zalgiris or Malmö. Theoretically, Ferencváros and Bodø-Glimt can play in the play-off round (the last qualifying round), but a lot depends on which opponents they get in the third round.
Seeded and unseeded teams are formed on the basis of club odds. For seeding, the rating of clubs from each pair with the highest odds is used. So far, it is only known that Copenhagen will be among the seeded teams in the playoff round, and Trabzonspor will be among the unseeded teams.
Cherchesov’s team will also not play Dynamo Kyiv until the group stage. It’s the same story as with Monaco. The Hungarian club follows the path of champions, while Dynamo follows the path of league representatives. The Ukrainian team in the second round of qualification is waiting for a meeting with Fenerbahce. If Dynamo passes this opponent, then they will play with the Austrian Sturm.
