Portugal secured their second UEFA Nations League title, defeating Spain 5-3 in a thrilling penalty shootout after 2-2 draw at Allianz Arena, Munich, on June 8, 2025.

Cristiano Ronaldo overcome with emotion, shed tears as he celebrated his third international trophy adding to his 2016 European Championship and 2019 Nations League triumphs.

The match, billed as a clash between Ronaldo and Spain’s young star Lamine Yamal, saw Portugal’s captain deliver a crucial equalizer his 138th international goal in the 61st minute.

Nuno Mendes, Portugal’s standout left-back neutralized Yamal and scored the first equalizer in the 26th minute, following Martin Zubimendi’s opener for Spain. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Spain’s lead before halftime, but Ronaldo’s volley, assisted by a deflected Mendes cross, leveled the score.

After a goalless extra time, the match went to penalties. Portugal’s Diogo Costa saved Alvaro Morata’s attempt, allowing Ruben Neves to clinch the victory with the decisive spot-kick.

Ronaldo sidelined by a late injury watched anxiously but erupted in joy as Portugal became the first team to win the Nations League twice.
