UFC president White said he would like to see a fight between Makhachev and Oliveira
MOSCOW, May 8 – President of the Absolute Fighting Championship (UFC) Dana White admitted that he would like to see a fight between Russian Islam Makhachev and Brazilian Charles Oliveira.
On Sunday, Oliveira defeated American Justin Gaethje ahead of schedule at UFC 274 in Phoenix (USA). However, on Friday, the Brazilian missed the weight before the title fight, which is why he was stripped of the lightweight title. After the fight, former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov turned to the leadership of the American promotion with a request to organize a duel between Oliveira and Makhachev in the fall. Makhachev himself announced his intention to fight for the UFC title with the Brazilian.
“Do I still want to have a fight between Makhachev and Beneil Dariush? Yes, I still want to organize it, but (commentator) Joe Rogan just grabbed me in the corridor and said that I should not do this. But I will tell you this, I I’ll be honest with you – I get it. Look, who doesn’t want to see Dariush and Islam? This is a great fight, this is a killer fight. I would like to see this fight to see who is the number one contender, “National News quotes White.
“But I’m not going to lie. After tonight, I wouldn’t mind seeing Islam against Oliveira. Let’s see what happens. We’ll meet at the promotion meeting, discuss it and figure it out,” he added.
The fight between Makhachev and Dariush was supposed to take place in February, but it was canceled due to an injury to the Iranian-American fighter.
