Wimbledon’s decision not to allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian tennis players led to the fact that the first number of the world ranking Daniil Medvedev decided to arrange a real grass marathon for himself. He showed up for all three possible tournaments – the ATP-250 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the ATP-500 in Halle and the ATP-250 in Mallorca. Moreover, in a week and a half, the Russian managed to defeat the most uncomfortable opponents for himself – the French Gilles Simon (the ratio of wins and losses before that was 0-3), Adriana Mannarino (1-3) and the Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Aguta (0-3). Moreover, the quarterfinal with Bautista in German Halle turned out to be unexpected in terms of the score. The match ended in two sets – 6:2, 6:4 in favor of the Russian. Moreover, Roberto had 9 break points, but he did not use any.

Daniil was very happy with this victory: “Firstly, he is an excellent tennis player. I remember all the matches we had… He played great tennis, it was hard for me to beat him. Today I had my plan, and I managed to implement it. I got more advantage in the most important moments because he had more break points than me. It wasn’t easy and I’m happy to win.” It should be noted that in matches with three opponents in Halle, Medvedev was able to win back all other people’s break points and never gave up his pitch in 17 attempts during the tournament. So Goffin had 2 break points, Ivashko had 6, and Bautista-Agut had 9.

Medvedev’s opponents in the semi-final went to local tennis player Oscar Otte, who received a special invitation as a semi-finalist last week in Stuttgart. And Oscar again got to this stage, and he was able to knock Karen Khachanov out of the grid around earlier, not allowing the Russian semi-final Khachanov – Medvedev to take place. Previously, Daniil had not played with Otte, but he spoke respectfully about him before the match: “I know that he is an excellent tennis player, especially on grass, he also plays very well on clay. Last week he reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart but lost to Matteo Berrettini in two tie-breaks. He’s a great player, great serve, great volley, so it won’t be easy. I need to prepare well, show my best tennis and try to win. We warmed up twice and trained once this week, even played a set that ended in a tiebreak. We started getting to know each other better and better, so it’s really cool that we’re playing each other tomorrow. When you train a lot with one tennis player, it’s interesting to see him in action. But tomorrow we will definitely not be friends!”

Otte, supported by the stands, successfully started the semi-finals. He took his submissions pretty quickly, and in other people’s games he started a fight. Already in the 2nd game, Daniil won back 2 break points, in the fourth – two more, and brought their ratio in the tournament to 21 won / 0 lost. With a score of 3:3 after the first filing of Oscar, the tension of the net was damaged. The referee on the tower, Mukhamed Layani, tried for a long time to fix this problem, and when the German returned to serve, he lost sight for a while – he, with his mistakes, including a double one, allowed Medvedev to get to the first break point in the match himself, but immediately corrected everything with aces – 4:3. And on Medvedev’s serve, the break-point score became 22/0, but the next, 23rd in a row, the Russian did not save and lost his serve for the first time in the tournament – 3:5.

Well, during the filing for the game, already on the set ball, Otte made a double mistake, became a little depressed, and Daniil immediately won two points and played a break. It came to a tie-break, in the key moments of which the Russian played more risky, and his risk was justified – 7:6 (7:3) in 1 hour 5 minutes. In the second set, for the time being, tennis players clearly kept their serve. Otte made a misfire in the 6th game, and Daniil immediately took advantage of this chance – 4:2, after which he confidently brought the match to victory – 7:6, 6:3 in 1 hour 36 minutes.

So Daniil Medvedev reached his second final in two weeks of tournaments on grass. Now on Sunday he will be confronted by the best tennis player from the pair Hubert Hurkach – Nick Kyrgios, each of whom has two victories over the Russian. So it will definitely not be easy for a Russian.
