Medvedev beat the Belarusian for the second time in a week

At the ATP-500 in Halle, Medvedev confidently passed Ilya Ivashko in the 2nd round, as was the case at the previous competition.

For the second time in a week, Daniil Medvedev beat Belarusian Ilya Ivashko. A few days ago it was at a tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and now it’s in Halle, Germany. So the Russian again made it to the 1/4 finals of the grass competition.

At the ATP-500 grass tournament in Halle, four Russians initially got into the grid – Daniil Medvedev (first seed), Andrey Rublev (3), Karen Khachanov (8) and Aslan Karatsev. But only two of them were able to overcome the starting barrier. Khachanov knocked Karatsev out of the grid, and last year’s finalist Rublev could not cope with Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia. Medvedev reached the final of the ATP-250 in Hertogenbosch last week, and therefore the organizers gave him two days of rest before the opening match in Halle. And Daniel did not disappoint his fans. In the first match, the Russian defeated his Belgian rival David Goffin, thus marking his return to the top of the rankings. Recall that on Monday, June 13, Medvedev became the first racket of the world for the second time.

RTF President Shamil Tarpishchev, in an interview with the Championship, praised Daniil’s victory at the start of the tournament in Halle: “They are both non-grass players, so they played almost like on the ground. There was no such interest in principle, because now the tournaments are not the main, preparatory ones. Dana needs to play enough, and it’s very good that he won. This tournament is not particularly significant for Dani. Grass is not an indicator for playing on hard. Let him play. He has a good net, especially there are no players who can cause serious problems.

On Thursday, the matches for reaching the 1/4 finals ended. Karen Khachanov fought Serb Laszlo Djere and defeated him in two sets in 1 hour 42 minutes – 7:6, 6:4. Two-time champion of the Grand Slam tournaments in mixed doubles Andrey Olkhovsky, in an interview with the Championship, commented on Khachanov’s progress to the quarterfinals: “It seems to me that Karen has become more confident in playing. Maybe the grass forces you to play tight on the back line, serve confidently enough. This is the game we expected from Karen. His game has not changed, but psychologically he has become stronger, and because of this, such a result. Ahead of the quarter-finals, and there is already any opponent is not easy. Let’s see what kind of game Karen will show in the next match. Let’s add that the rival of the Russian will be the German athlete Oscar Otte, who occupies the 51st place in the ranking. Otte made a comeback in the match with Basilashvili, who knocked out Rublev at the start of the tournament.

Medvedev’s rival in the fight for reaching the 1/4 finals was the Belarusian Ilya Ivashko, with whom they had already fought just six days ago in the quarterfinals of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Then Daniel won in two sets – 7:6, 6:4. But do not forget that the Belarusian already has a successful duel with Medvedev – within the framework of the Davis Cup – 2018.

In contrast to the match a week ago, Daniil and Ilya held their serves quite confidently this time at first. Ivashko started having problems in the 7th game, but he managed to save himself from a double break point. The 10th game turned out to be the most stubborn, already on the pitch of Medvedev. Six times it was “exactly”, Daniil played three set points and equalized the situation – 5:5. It came to a tie-break, where luck smiled on the Russian – 7:6 (7:4). Note that Medvedev filed six aces for the game with only one double fault. Success in the first set gave Daniil extra energy. He flew around the court as if on wings, quickly made a break – 3:1 and then, having missed two match points at the reception with a score of 5:2, he nevertheless brought the match to victory – 7:6, 6:3 in 1 hour 38 minutes.

That’s how Daniil Medvedev reached the 1/4 finals of the grass tournament for the second week in a row. His opponent will be determined in a pair of Tallon Grikspor – Roberto Bautista-Agut.
