Last July, Uruguay faced a tough 1-0 defeat against Colombia in the semi-finals of the Copa America. The match, held at the Bank of America Stadium, ended in disappointment for the Uruguayan team, but the drama didn’t stop there.
After the game, a tense situation unfolded when Colombian fans began booing the families of some Uruguayan players seated in the gallery.
Concerned for their families’ safety, several Uruguayan players, including star forward Darwin Núñez, 25 (Darwin Nunez), confronted the Colombian fans. This altercation led to Núñez being handed a five-match ban and a fine by the South American football governing body, CONMEBOL.
Punishments and Fines
In total, 11 Uruguayan players faced penalties after CONMEBOL’s investigation into the incident. Núñez received the harshest punishment, with a five-match suspension and a $20,000 fine. Other players involved in the brawl also faced suspensions and fines, though less severe:
- Rodrigo Bentancur, a midfielder for Tottenham, banned for 4 matches.
- Mathias Oliveira, Ronald Araujo, and Jose Maria Gimenez, all Uruguayan defenders, received 3-match bans.
In addition to the bans, fines ranged from $5,000 to $16,000 for the other involved players. The Uruguayan Football Federation wasn’t spared either; they were fined $20,000, with the amount to deducted from their prize money and revenue.
Fallout and Future Matches
Uruguayan defender Jose Maria Gimenez explained that their actions driven by a need to protect their family members, who in the section of the gallery targeted by Colombian fans.
Although CONMEBOL has the right to appeal the penalties, they have not yet specified when the bans will take effect. The suspensions will apply to all CONMEBOL-organized matches.
This means Núñez and his teammates will miss key upcoming games, including Uruguay’s friendly against Guatemala in Florida next Sunday. And the World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay on September 6 and Venezuela on September 10.
As for Colombia, they advanced to the Copa America final after their victory over Uruguay but ultimately lost to Argentina in the final match.
