In the case of Diego Maradona‘s death, seven out of eight medical professionals involved in his care were charged with negligence. An Argentine court has now postponed their trial until next March.
Earlier in May, the trial was delayed until October, but now it has been pushed back again, with the new date set for March 11 next year, according to a report by AFP.
Maradona, who had struggled with cocaine and alcohol addiction, was recovering from brain surgery to remove a blood clot when he passed away in November 2020.
After leaving the hospital, he stayed in a rented house in Buenos Aires, where he was found dead in his bed, just two weeks after the surgery. The cause of death was a heart attack.
In 2023, an Argentine court ruled that neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychologist Agustina Cosachov, and six others, including nurses, would face trial over Maradona’s death. One nurse, Gisela Dahiana Madrid, requested a separate trial, which will begin on October 2.
Prosecutors claimed the medical team provided “reckless” and “inadequate” care. In 2021, a panel of experts reported that Maradona would have had a better chance of survival if he had been given proper medical care. If found guilty, the accused could face 8 to 25 years in prison.
