MOSCOW, 8 Aug – The Congress of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) instructed the board of the organization to set up a working group on the issue of allowing Russia and Belarus to compete in the near future, according to the website of the Russian Chess Federation (RFC).
On Monday, the second day of the FIDE General Assembly meeting took place in Chennai, India. In March, the organization suspended the Russian national teams from participating in international competitions.
At a meeting of the General Assembly, it was decided to create a working group that will consider the further possibility of participation of the national teams of Russia and Belarus in international tournaments and find a new solution that takes into account the opinion of congressmen and the latest recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The preliminary FIDE budget for 2022-2023 was also approved.
At the end of February, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that international sports federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete because of the situation in Ukraine. A number of international federations excluded Russians and Belarusians from competitions under their auspices, and also canceled the competitions in Russia, other federations allowed athletes in a neutral status.
