Lionel Messi watching from the stands joined thousands of fans in celebrating the tournament’s vibrant kickoff. However, the initial excitement has faded as the new-format competition grapples with mounting criticism over empty stadiums, extreme heat and uncompetitive matches.

Just a week into the tournament, low attendance has become a glaring issue. A prime example is the Chelsea vs. Los Angeles FC match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the U.S., where over 5,000 of the 70,000 seats remained unsold despite reduced ticket prices.

Fans and analysts point to poorly timed midday matches, often scheduled at 3:00 PM, as a deterrent. With temperatures soaring past 31°C during the PSG vs. Atlético Madrid group-stage clash. players struggled to maintain their usual pace, as noted by the PSG coach: “The heat disrupted our rhythm.”

The tournament has also faced backlash for lopsided encounters. Bayern Munich’s 10-0 thrashing of amateur side Auckland City in the group stage highlighted the lack of competitive balance, dampening the event’s appeal. Football stakeholders argue that such one-sided games undermine the tournament’s global draw. La Liga president Javier Tebas went further calling for competition’s cancellation: “This tournament disrupts domestic leagues, especially in Europe, and should be scrapped.”

Critics argue that FIFA’s ambitious expansion of the tournament. A flagship project of president Gianni Infantino, prioritizes revenue over player health and fan experience.
