FIFA to review its policy on allowing transgender athletes to compete

MOSCOW, June 21 – The International Football Federation (FIFA) intends to review its policy on the admission of transgender athletes to competitions, Reuters reported.
“FIFA is currently reviewing its gender selection rules in consultation with interested experts. Due to the ongoing process, FIFA is unable to comment on the specifics of the proposed amendments to existing rules,” a FIFA spokesman told Reuters.
“If FIFA needs to verify a player’s eligibility before the new rules go into effect, any such case will be considered on a case-by-case basis, given FIFA’s clear commitment to respecting human rights,” FIFA said.
On Sunday, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) tightened the rules for the participation of transgender people in competitions. Sebastian Coe, president of the World Athletics Association, said on Monday that the organization’s board will consider creating new rules for the inclusion of transgender athletes in competitions at the end of 2022.
