KHIMKI, 25 Jul – The Khimki court of the Moscow region postponed for a day a hearing in the case of basketball player Brittney Griner on the smuggling of hash oil due to a fainting of a US embassy employee, a correspondent reports from the courtroom.
Now the consular officer is recovering from a faint. As US Chargé d’Affaires a.i. in Moscow, Elizabeth Rud, explained to reporters, it was very hot in the courtroom, and the man “needed a short pause, they brought him water.”
According to Rud, now the man “feels good.” According to the correspondent, he looks to be about 60 years old.
Prior to this incident, a narcologist psychiatrist was questioned in court as a witness for the defense.
According to him, in countries where marijuana is legal, it is actively used, including for sports, myofascial injuries and “even for oncology,” especially when it is impossible to use traditional painkillers.
Traces of cannabinoids, the expert noted, persist in the urine for up to ten days with occasional use and three to four days with a single use. At the same time, he clarified that professional athletes cannot use cannabinoids on an ongoing basis due to inhibition of the reaction.
At the moment when the defense asked to interrogate another specialist who drew up a conclusion about the drug found in Greiner, the consular officer fainted.
As a result, the meeting had to be postponed “to July 27, 2:30 pm,” the court decided.
At its last hearing on July 15, the defense presented in court an authorization granted to Greiner by the Arizona Department of Health for the medical use of cannabis. The rationale is the athlete’s complaints about “chronic debilitating pain.”
In addition, the lawyers attached to the case file a certificate of Greiner’s income, according to which she has been paying taxes in Russia since 2015. The amount was not announced, but the defense referred to the fact that it was “multi-million dollar taxes.”
Last Friday, US congressmen introduced a draft resolution to the US Senate calling for the immediate release of the basketball player.
Greiner previously pleaded guilty in court, but insisted that she had no intent to commit a crime, she “was going in a hurry.”
In February, Griner, who arrived on a flight from New York, was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport. During the inspection, the Americans found “vapes” with a liquid with a specific smell in their hand luggage – the examination later determined that it was hash oil.
A criminal case was initiated on the smuggling of narcotic drugs, the girl was imprisoned in a pre-trial detention center. The sanction of the article provides for from 5 to 10 years in prison.
Greiner is one of the most titled basketball players in the world. She was a two-time Olympian and two-time world champion with Team USA and the 2014 WNBA Champion with Phoenix. The center is included in the official list of the 25 best players in the women’s NBA. He has been playing for the Yekaterinburg UMMC since 2015.
