The White House spoke about the mistake with the conversation of the arrested basketball player from the United States
WASHINGTON, Jun 21 – The White House said the State Department is working to correct a “deplorable mistake” that disrupted a telephone conversation between basketball player Brittney Griner, who was arrested in Russia, and her wife in the United States.
In an interview with AP, Sherell Griner complained that within a few hours she tried 11 times to call the line provided by the American embassy in Moscow, but allegedly there was no employee there to take the call.
“This was an unfortunate mistake, and the State Department is working to correct it as soon as possible,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
It was supposed to be the couple’s first telephone conversation in the four months since Greiner’s arrest in Russia. It was prepared for their wedding anniversary. The State Department explained the incident as a “logistical error.” According to Sherell Greiner, “someone from the government” called her to apologize.
Greiner was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in February after “vapes” with drug-containing “hash oil” were found in her hand luggage. The American now faces five to ten years in prison on a criminal case of drug smuggling.
Greiner is one of the most titled basketball players in the world. She was a two-time Olympian and a two-time world champion with Team USA, and the 2014 Women’s National Basketball Association champion with Phoenix. Before her arrest, she played for the UMMC team from Yekaterinburg.
