Inter Miami’s hopes of a record-breaking season took a hit today, as they drew 1-1 with New York City FC in their latest Major League Soccer (MLS) match.

With a playoff spot already secured, Miami is chasing the record for the most points in an MLS season. However, today’s result was a setback in that quest.

Despite their dominance, Miami had to wait until the 75th minute to find the back of the net. Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana scored off a pass from Jordi Alba, Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. But notably, Lionel Messi had no goal or assist in the match, a rare occurrence for the star, and Miami couldn’t hold on to the victory.
In the fifth minute of added time, New York City FC’s James Sands equalized with a powerful header from Santiago Rodriguez’s corner, leaving Miami with just one point from the game.

With this draw, Miami now sits atop the MLS Eastern Conference with 64 points from 30 games, just four games shy of the league record of 73 points in a season. They’ll need at least 10 points from their final four matches to surpass the 2021 record set by the New England Revolution.
