The tournament, halted on May 8 after an air raid alert disrupted a Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala, will now feature 13 remaining league matches across six venues, with playoff venues yet to be confirmed.

  • June 1: Qualifier 2
  • June 3: Final

Why the Schedule Changed

IPL was suspended on May 9 following heightened security concerns, with Dharamsala match abandoned mid-game. BCCI, after consultations with franchises, government agencies, and broadcasters, opted for a swift resumption post-ceasefire. Originally set to conclude on May 25 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, tournament now extends to June 3 due to the week-long pause. Kolkata may lose the final due to a rain forecast, with Ahmedabad as a potential alternative.

BCCI shortlisted six venues to ensure safety, excluding earlier plans for Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata to host league matches. Hyderabad was initially slated for Qualifier 1 and Eliminator, and Kolkata for Qualifier 2 and the final, but these venues remain unconfirmed for playoffs.

Foreign Players’ Participation

The suspension saw most overseas players, including Australians Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, return home. The BCCI has urged franchises to reassemble players by Tuesday, May 13, with an estimated 80% expected to return. However, some, like Starc, may not participate due to prior travel or injuries. South African Marco Jansen is reportedly available, being in Dubai. Franchises face logistical challenges, prompting the BCCI to start on May 17, allowing extra time for travel arrangements.

Impact on Teams and Fans

Compact schedule, with only two double-headers, aims to maintain the tournament’s intensity. The 10 teams—split into Group A (Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Group B (Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants)—will play out the remaining 13 league matches to determine the top four for the playoffs.

Fans are thrilled, with posts on X celebrating IPL’s return. “IPL is back, starting May 17! Double-headers and a June 3 final—cricket fever is on!” one user wrote. However, concerns linger about foreign player availability and potential weather disruptions, particularly for the final.

Looking Ahead

BCCI’s decision to resume IPL 2025 underscores cricket’s resilience amid regional tensions. With 74 matches total, including 12 league games and four playoffs, the tournament remains a global spectacle. Live broadcasts on Star Sports and streaming on JioHotstar will keep fans engaged. As the league races toward its June 3 finale, the focus is on delivering thrilling cricket while navigating logistical and security challenges.
