Makhachev climbed to second place in the UFC rankings, regardless of weight categories
MOSCOW, 15 Nov – Champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in lightweight Russian Islam Makhachev has risen from third to second place in the ranking of the promotion, regardless of weight categories, according to the website of the organization.
Previously, second place was occupied by New Zealander Israel Adesanya, who lost to Alex Pereira of Brazil on Saturday at UFC 281 in New York and failed to defend the promotion’s middleweight title for the sixth time. The representative of New Zealand dropped four positions. Australian featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski tops the list, followed by British welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
At the October UFC 280 tournament in Abu Dhabi, Makhachev defeated the Brazilian Charles Oliveira ahead of schedule (choking in the second round) and became the new lightweight champion of the promotion.
In the next fight, which will take place on February 12, 2023 at UFC 284 in Perth (Australia), Makhachev will make his first title defense against Volkanovski.
