Biathlete Carrara lost her victory at the European Championships due to shooting at someone else’s target
MOSCOW, 25 Jan – Italian Michela Carrara lost her victory in the individual race at the European Championships, which takes place in Lenzerheide (Switzerland), due to shooting at someone else’s target, according to the official website of the International Biathlon Union (IBU).
On Wednesday, Carrara took first place in the race. According to official information, she made one miss on four firing lines. After the end of the competition, the jury reviewed the shooting of the Italian and adjusted the number of misses to three due to shooting at someone else’s target – information about this came from the coaches of the Italian team. Carrara’s target was shot by one of the American athletes who were standing on a nearby mat.
The victory was awarded to the German Lisa Maria Spark. Sochi Olympic relay champion Yuliya Jima, a Ukrainian athlete, took second place, while Selina Grotian, representative of the German national team, took third place. Carrara dropped to 11th place.
The European Championship takes place from 25 to 29 January.
The Congress of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) in September decided to uphold the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions until further notice amid the situation in Ukraine.
