Italy’s national football team is set to usher in a new era with appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as head coach, replacing Luciano Spalletti, whose tenure ended after 2-0 victory over Moldova on June 9, 2025.

Italian Football Federation (FIGC) moved swiftly to name Gattuso, a former AC Milan and Rangers midfielder, following a string of disappointing results under Spalletti.

Spalletti’s departure came after a turbulent period, with Italy losing three of their last five matches, including a 5-4 aggregate defeat to Germany in the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals and a 3-0 loss to Norway in their World Cup qualifying opener on June 6, 2025.
Norway defeat proved to be the final straw, prompting Spalletti’s sacking after less than two years in charge. Despite a 2-0 win against Moldova in his final match, Spalletti faced criticism for Italy’s lackluster performances. Including a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign where the Azzurri exited in the round of 16.
Gattuso, known for his fiery leadership and tenacity as a player, emerges as the FIGC’s choice to steer Italy toward the 2026 World Cup. Gianluigi Buffon, head of delegation with FIGC, confirmed the appointment, stating. “We’ve worked hard and I think we made the best choice.” Gattuso who recently parted ways with Hajduk Split, brings a high-pressing intense coaching style. Though his managerial record including stints at AC Milan and Fiorentina has been mixed.

His brief tenure at Fiorentina in 2021 ended after 22 days due to transfer disagreements. But his passion and tactical acumen make him a bold pick for the Azzurri.
Italy, the defending European champions, face a critical World Cup qualifying campaign after missing the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Gattuso’s mission will be to restore stability and secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
