UEFA Super Cup match in 2023 moved from Kazan to Athens
MOSCOW, Jan 25 – /strong>. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has withdrawn from Russia the right to host the 2023 UEFA Super Cup game, which was supposed to be held on August 16 in Kazan, according to the UEFA website.
The UEFA Executive Committee on Wednesday decided to move the meeting to Athens. It, as planned, will take place on August 16.
Kazan received the right to host the match for the UEFA Super Cup in March 2020. On the territory of Russia, matches for the UEFA Super Cup have not been held before. At the end of December, the Minister of Sports of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov said that UEFA had not been in contact with Kazan for a long time regarding the match for the Super Cup.
In February 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA issued a joint statement, according to which Russian teams and clubs were suspended from participation in international competitions for an indefinite period due to the events in Ukraine. In this regard, the Russian team was excluded from the number of participants in the play-offs for entering the World Cup in Qatar. UEFA has also decided to move the 2021/22 Champions League final from St. Petersburg to the suburbs of Paris. In September, UEFA did not allow the Russian team to the draw for the qualifying tournament of the European Championship – 2024.
