MOSCOW, 22 Jul – Lokomotiv Moscow received from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) the right to host the Russian Railways International Cup among women’s teams, according to the website of the railwaymen.
Competitions will be held in Cherkizovo from 28 to 31 July according to the playoff system. Lokomotiv, Kazakhstan’s BIIK-Shymkent, Belarusian Minsk and Serbian Red Star will take part in the tournament.
“The holding of such a competition is aimed at popularizing women’s football and will attract an additional audience among the fans of Russia and the participating countries. This is a good opportunity for teams to test themselves at the international level. In this context, I want to emphasize the importance of the fact that the club received permission from UEFA to host an international tournament at such a difficult time for Russian football,” said Lokomotiv CEO Vladimir Leonchenko.
Lokomotiv notes that the Russian Railways International Cup will be the first international tournament agreed with UEFA in Russia.
In March, UEFA and the International Football Federation (FIFA) issued a joint verdict to remove Russia from international competitions, including hosting tournaments under the auspices of organizations on the territory of these countries. All UEFA and FIFA verdicts were challenged by the Russian side in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, and on July 15, CAS rejected the appeals of the Russian Football Union (RFU), CSKA, Dynamo, Zenit and Sochi on a ban on participating in international competitions.
