MOSCOW, 28 Jul – Russian mixed-style fighter Islam Makhachev was among the contenders for the annual world award World MMA Awards – 2022 in the nomination “Fighter of the Year”, according to the official website of the award.
Earlier it became known that Makhachev on October 22 in Abu Dhabi at the UFC 280 tournament will fight for the lightweight title against the Brazilian Charles Oliveira. Previously, this belt belonged to the Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov, who ended his career in October 2020 undefeated (29 wins in 29 fights).
Oliveira, Australian Alexander Volkanovski, American Johnny Eblin and Cameroonian-born Frenchman Francis Ngannou are also contenders for the award. Voting ends September 30th.
Makhachev also made it to the International Fighter of the Year nomination, where he will compete with Volkanovski, Croatian Roberto Soldich, Pole Mateusz Gamrot and Sweden’s Chechen-born Khamzat Chimaev.
Makhachev is 30 years old, he has 22 wins and one loss in mixed martial arts.
