MOSCOW, July 25 – The record of tennis player Daniil Medvedev is an achievement for Russian sports, he is 26 years old, many victories in his career are yet to come, Dmitry Svishchev, head of the State Duma Sports Committee, told reporters.
Medvedev entered his tenth week as world number one and broke the Russian men’s singles record previously held by Marat Safin (nine weeks).
“Daniil Medvedev’s record is a great achievement for our sport… But Medvedev is only 26 years old, many victories in his career are yet to come,” Svishchev said.
He noted that in men’s tennis for a long time there was no such dominance on the part of Russian athletes.
“We haven’t had such dominance in men’s tennis for a long time. Congratulations to Medvedev and we hope that the record for being on the first line will last for more than one week,” he said.
Svishchev added that, despite the provocations against Medvedev, he continues to perform at a high level.
“Our tennis players continue to play for the country, despite the sanctions and various obstacles. We remember how many attempts were made to provocation against Daniil – bans from tournaments and so on, but he survived and coped,” he concluded.
