Matytsin discussed with the President of the RBU the legal aspects of the removal of Russian biathletes

MOSCOW, 21 Mar – The Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin held a meeting with the President of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) Viktor Maigurov, on the agenda was a discussion of the removal of domestic athletes from competitions due to the situation in Ukraine, according to the RBU website.
“We discussed with (Minister of Sports) Oleg Vasilyevich the legal aspects of the removal of the RBU, initiated by the International Biathlon Union (IBU), as well as the preparation of biathlon sports teams in the upcoming season in the emerging conditions. We agreed that even in difficult times, sport should stay out of politics. Sports competitions can and should be the bridge that brings fans from different countries together. A policy of discrimination based on political grounds is a road to nowhere,” Maygurov said.
On Thursday, the IBU announced the start of the procedure for the removal of the RBU and the Belarusian Biathlon Federation with immediate effect. The head of the RBU, Viktor Maigurov, said that the RBU is ready to file a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if the decision to suspend membership in the IBU comes into force.
