When discussing iconic football duos, the names Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez stand out prominently. They carved their legacy in Barcelona, achieving remarkable success and setting numerous records.
The pair scored an astonishing 621 goals in 258 matches. Suarez directly contributed to 43 of Messi‘s goals, while Messi assisted in 56 of Suarez’s strikes. They won 13 trophies for Barcelona, 4 La Liga titles, and 1 Champions League win.
However, their journey as teammates took a pause when Suarez transferred to Atletico Madrid in 2020. In this year, Suarez reunited with Messi at Inter Miami, where they once again formed a formidable partnership.
Last Sunday, Suarez scored twice, helping Inter Miami secure a spot in the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs. His outstanding performance earned him Man of the Match for the third time this season and this achievement puts Suarez on a new record alongside Messi.
Messi had previously won the MLS Man of the Match award three times this season. As a result, Inter Miami became the first team in MLS history to have two players win the award three times in a single season.
Earlier in April, Messi and Suarez matched the record held by David Beckham and Landon Donovan, who had each won the Man of the Match award twice in 2008.
Interestingly, while Messi continues to make history with Suarez, he is currently sidelined due to an injury sustained during the Copa America final in mid-July.
The Argentina captain has not returned to the field since then. However, Miami’s coach, Gerardo Martino, has assured fans that Messi will be back before the MLS playoffs begin in the last week of October. Once recovered, Messi will aim to break even more records alongside Suarez.
