How Alexander Golovin played

The top game of the Russian brought Monaco closer to the Champions League. The Monegasques won, losing 0:2.

Two rounds before the finish of Ligue 1, Monaco was in third place, giving a ticket to the Champions League qualification. The Monegasques were two points ahead of Nice (fourth position is already the Europa League) and three points behind Marseille, which was second and entered the Champions League directly. After eight victories in a row in the French Championship, the chances of Philippe Clement’s team to beat Marseille seemed quite high: today it was necessary to beat the middle peasants Brest at home.

Monaco tried to suppress the opponent, but failed. The first half-time is a real shock for Monegasque fans! The guests opened the scoring already in the 10th minute, when Jean-Kevin Duverne received the ball in the penalty area and shot into the bottom corner. Worse, in the 23rd minute, the hosts conceded the second goal. In this episode, forward Yousef Belayli played brilliantly, who burst into the penalty area of Alexander Nyubel, removed two defenders with tricks and struck an accurate shot into the near corner.

Clement, judging by his appearance, could not believe his eyes. Moreover, Brest had a great chance to score a third goal on counterattacks. At the end of half an hour, Irvin Cardona ran one on one from the right half-flank, but forgave Monaco by sending the ball wide of the goal.

But, of course, the Monegasques, who attacked a lot and possessed the ball 65% of the time, created chances. Alexander Golovin moved well, opened up between the lines and, as usual, was responsible for corners in the team. One of his innings almost ended in a goal when Axel Disasi struck with a header – the ball hit the crossbar. Then VAR studied the episode with the removal of the ball by the Brest defender from the goal line. Indeed, the guests miraculously managed to avoid a missed goal.

Before the break, Monaco still scored. Again, with the help of VAR, the judges figured out that there was a handball in the Brest penalty area. Wissam Ben Yedder took the ball, went to the “point” and converted a penalty.

Golovin earned a yellow card before the break for a conflict with an opponent. Christoph Erey fouled on the Russian, and our legionnaire began to sort things out with him. Perhaps it was not worth it to do this, there was no obvious rudeness. But such a match is all about emotions! Golovin and Erei provoked a skirmish in which a whole group of players from both teams took part. Another memorable moment before the break: Belail did not feel very well, he went off the field and vomited there. Nevertheless, the Algerian remained in the game.

In the second half, Monaco continued to break through the defense of Brest, acting at a high pace. It became more and more difficult for the tired guests to cope with the hosts. As a result, the Monegasques scored two goals in four minutes. Golovin took part in the first of them: the Russian midfielder made a soft throw at Kevin Volland, who gave the pass to Ben Yedder, and the Frenchman flew into the penalty area and scored a double.

Ben Yedder is undeniably the protagonist of this match. Soon he scored a hat-trick. Aurélien Tchouameni threw the ball into the center of the penalty area, and the striker played a great lead and struck with his head.

The scorer of “Monaco” did not calm down on this, he could arrange poker. It was after his strike that Kevin Folland excelled in finishing off, scoring the fourth goal for Monaco. And here it was not without the participation of Golovin. Alexander launched the attack with a timely transfer to the flank on Ismail Jacobs, who hung on Ben Yedder. This goal was checked for offside: it seemed that there was an offside position, but VAR showed that everything was in accordance with the rules.

“Golovin is a maestro!” In France, delighted with the trick of the Russian in the 100th match for Monaco

Monegasques dominated and went to a beautiful comeback. With a better implementation, they would have won big. “Brest” was simply blown away. Golovin played 78 minutes, after which, to the applause of the stands, he gave way to Gelson Martins. His stats are: 66 touches, two shots (one on target), four underhand passes, 81% pass accuracy, eight out of 11 duels won, six tackles, one interception and two self-inflicted fouls. The Whoscored site gave Alexander a very high score – 7.86 points. He is in the top 3 of Monaco’s best players.

Lucky with the results of competitors: “Marseille” and “Nice” in the same minutes were defeated respectively by “Rennes” (0:2) and “Lille” (1:3).
