MOSCOW, 20 Jul – Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi takes seventh place on the first day of the third stage of the Grand Chess Tour, which takes place in Zagreb.
On the first day, the grandmasters played three games of rapid. Nepomniachtchi played a draw with black pieces against the reigning world chess champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, with white pieces against the Frenchman Alireza Firouzja, and lost with black pieces to Azerbaijani Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
Carlsen, who on Wednesday announced his refusal to play for the world chess crown with Nepomniachtchi, beat Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov in the second game with black and drew Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with white.
After three rounds, the table looks like this:

2. Magnus Carlsen (2, Norway);

4. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2, France);
5. Jorden van Forest (2, Netherlands);

10. Veselin Topalov (0, Bulgaria).
The rapid tournament consists of nine games and will end on July 22. Blitz competitions will be held from 23 to 24 July.
