MOSCOW, 26 Jul – The Montreal Canadiens and New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL) have banned their 2022 draft picks Juraj Słafkowski and Szymon Nemets from playing for the national hockey team at the Edmonton Junior World Championship, according to the Ice Hockey Federation website. Slafkovsky and Nemec were selected first and second overall in the 2022 draft, respectively.
“Słafkowski and Nemec were banned from the World Championship by their new employers, the NHL clubs that drafted them,” the report said.
At the end of December 2021, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) stopped the youth world championship in Canadian Red Deer and Edmonton due to the spread of coronavirus among tournament participants. The tournament will be played from 9 to 20 August.
In March, the IIHF announced the suspension of the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international tournaments due to the situation in Ukraine, and also took away from Russia the right to host the youth world championship, which was to be held in December 2022 – January 2023 in Omsk and Novosibirsk, as well as an adult World Championship – 2023, which was supposed to take St. Petersburg.
The Russian national team at the World Youth Championship will be replaced by the Latvian team.
