MOSCOW, 20 Jul – The 2022 Olympic champion in figure skating, American Nathan Chen, said that it was an honor for him to go on the same ice with the Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu all his life.
Hanyu, 27, announced his retirement at a press conference on Tuesday.
“It was a lifelong honor for me to be able to stand on the same ice with Yuzuru Hanyu. Thank you for everything you have done for the sport and for everything you will undoubtedly continue to do for it,” Chen wrote on his Instagram * .
Chen is 22 years old. He is a three-time world champion in singles. Also on his account is silver at the Beijing Olympics in team competitions and team bronze at the Games in Pyeongchang. At the 2022 Olympics, Chen became the champion in single skating, Hanyu took fourth place.
Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion (2014, 2018), a two-time world champion (2014, 2017), a four-time Grand Prix Finals winner and a Four Continents Tournament (2020) winner in men’s singles. In March, the Japanese missed the World Figure Skating Championships due to a right ankle injury sustained during a performance at the Beijing Olympics.
