Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Maria Gusakova dies at 91

MOSCOW, May 8 – Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Maria Gusakova has died at the age of 91, according to the official page of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of St. Petersburg on the social network VKontakte.
At the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley (USA), Gusakova won gold in the 10 km race and silver in the 3×5 km relay. She also won the bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics in Austrian Innsbruck in the 10 km race. Gusakova – 1962 world champion in the 3×5 km relay. The cause of death of the ex-athlete is not specified.
“Today at 5 am, the 1960 Olympic champion in cross-country skiing, Maria Ivanovna Gusakova, passed away. A legend of Leningrad sports, one of our first Olympic champions. Maria Ivanovna was 91 years old. We mourn. Blessed memory,” the message says.
