Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Hanyu wins Japan Face of the Year
MOSCOW, 5 Dec – Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu has been named the “face of the year” among athletes by the Japanese portal Yahoo Japan, Kyodo News reports.
Hanyu became the most requested person in 2022 in Japan. The portal reported that inquiries about the figure skater have risen since he competed at the Beijing Winter Olympics earlier this year. In July, the 27-year-old Japanese announced his retirement from sports.
In other categories, Japanese users most searched for information about actress Wakana Matsumoto, the musical group Naniwa Danshi, the movie Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise, and the Nintendo video game Splatoon 3.
Hanyu is a two-time Olympic champion (2014, 2018), a two-time world champion (2014, 2017), a four-time Grand Prix Finals winner and a Four Continents Tournament (2020) winner in men’s singles. In March, the Japanese missed the World Figure Skating Championships due to a right ankle injury sustained while performing at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, where he finished fourth.
