Carolina coach Brindamore: pleasantly surprised by Kochetkov’s game

MOSCOW, 27 April – Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brindamore admitted he was surprised by Russian goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, who on Tuesday won a third consecutive victory after his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Carolinas beat the New York Rangers 4-3 on Tuesday. Kochetkov played his third match and came out in the starting lineup for the second time. He saved 32 of 35 shots.
“We are pleasantly surprised by Peter, because we could not even imagine such a thing. Yes, and no one could. This is a wonderful story,” the NHL official website quotes Brindamore.
Kochetkov last week was urgently called from the farm club “Carolina” in connection with the injury of the main goalkeeper Frederik Andersen. The Russian made his NHL debut Saturday in a 3-2 win against the New Jersey Devils before coming on as a substitute against the injured Antti Raanta against the New York Islanders.
“He’s just got the confidence and a bit of swagger that I think a goaltender needs, especially since he’s been literally thrown into games,” said Caroline defenseman Brady Shay.
Kochetkov, 22, was selected by the Carolinas in the 2019 draft with the 36th overall pick.
