After two consecutive away draws, Inter Miami fans were eager for a win as their team played at home today. However, Miami had to settle for another draw, this time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Despite falling behind against Charlotte, they managed to salvage a draw thanks to a goal from Lionel Messi.
Despite three straight draws, Miami hasn’t lost ground. They still lead Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer in points, and remain at top of Supporters Shield standings. Additionally, Messi and Miami have already secured a spot in the MLS playoffs.
Miami started game a bit sluggishly on their home field. Charlotte took advantage of this and went ahead in 57th minute. Miami responded with more energy after conceding goal. Just minutes later, Messi came close to scoring with a fantastic header off a Jordi Alba corner, but Charlotte’s goalkeeper blocked attempt.
Miami didn’t wait long to level score. 67th minute Messi unleashed a powerful left-footed shot from outside box, beating Charlotte goalkeeper. This marked Messi’s 15th goal in Major League Soccer this season.
Ten minutes after equalizer, Miami thought they had secured a winning goal. In 77th minute, Charlotte’s French defender Adilson Malanda brought down Diego Gomez inside the box, leading to a penalty decision. However, after a VAR review, referee overturned penalty.
Even with that setback, Miami still had a golden opportunity to win, but Luis Suarez couldn’t finish an easy chance. Following this draw, Miami sits at the top with 65 points from 31 games. Columbus, in second place, has 57 points, while Cincinnati holds 56 points. Miami only needs a draw against Columbus next Thursday to secure Supporters’ Shield trophy.
