MOSCOW, 13 Aug – Paris Saint-Germain and France footballer Kylian Mbappe has named himself one of three favorites for the Ballon d’Or award presented by France Football magazine.
Previously, a list of 30 contenders for the award was announced, which will be presented on October 17 in Paris. The 23-year-old Frenchman considers his compatriot Karim Benzema from Real Madrid to be the favorite to receive the trophy.
“I would name Benzema, myself and Sadio Mane as the main contenders for the Golden Ball. Benzema is already 34 years old. It is obvious that he had the best season of his career, once again won the Champions League, scored very important goals. In his place I would stop thinking about the Ballon d’Or if I didn’t get it now,” Mbappé told AFP.
The Ballon d’Or was established by France Football in 1956 as a prize for the best player of the year in Europe (based on the opinions of a group of sports journalists). In 2010, FIFA and France Football announced the merger of the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Player of the Year awards (determined based on the vote of the captains and coaches of the national teams). In September 2016, France Football announced the end of its partnership with FIFA and returned to the original system for determining the best player of the year.
