The Russian lost in the 2nd round of Kitzbühel to Serb Lajovic. Our tennis players are not left in the net.

Russian Aslan Karatsev is getting closer to the seeding zone at the US Open. Now he is in the region of 36th place in the ranking. However, Karatsev did not reach his 3rd consecutive quarterfinal. At a tournament in Austria, he lost to Serb Lajovic.

In the last week of July, the short clay summer part of the season ends with two ATP-250 tournaments in Umag and Kitzbühel, and at the same time, the long American series on hard has already started in Atlanta. Of the Russians in the top 100, only Aslan Karatsev decided to play this week and the Austrian Kitzbühel arrived. There he received a high 4th seed, was released from matches of the 1st round and entered the fight only with the last start on Wednesday. While Aslan was waiting for his opening match, it turned out that the current champion Kasper Ruud (1), who had just won the title in Gstaad, and the finalist of the same tournament, Matteo Berrettini (2), withdrew from the tournament. So the Spaniard Roberto Bautista-Aguta (3) turned out to be the highest seeded number (3), and the Russian actually became the second racket of the tournament in Kitzbühel.

Since the third player, Marton Fucovich, also withdrew from the tournament, there were three lucky losers in the grid at once, and one of them, 21-year-old Russian Alexander Shevchenko, made his debut at the ATP main draw level. As rivals, Alexander got the favorite of the local public, the former third world number Dominic Thiem, who is trying to regain his former shape after an injury. The Austrian, who reached the 1/2 finals in Gstaad last week, confidently coped with the Russian debutant – 6:4, 6:2. As it turned out later, Shevchenko was not the only lucky loser from Russia. The 25-year-old Ivan Gakhov also received a “lucky loser” ticket. Moreover, the 315th racket of the world had to enter the fight only from the second round. The Dutchman Tallon Grikspor (6), who took the place of the eliminated Berrettini in the draw, withdrew from the tournament at the last moment, which allowed Gakhov to make his debut in the main draw of the ATP competition. Ivan did not lose his head – he gave the fight to the 140th racket of the world Yannick Hanfman, but he already lost everything after 2.5 hours in the 3rd set – 3:6, 7:6, 4:6.

Karatsev started the tournament in Kitzbuhel with a duel with 32-year-old Dusan Lajovic from Serbia. At the level of the main draws of ATP tournaments, tennis players have not played before, but in the Kremlin Cup qualification – 2012, Lajovic turned out to be stronger – 7:6, 3:6, 7:5. Note that for the 28-year-old Aslan this season is developing unevenly. First, he had a coronavirus, because of which he missed the ATP Cup, then he immediately won the title in Sydney and reached the 3rd round at the Australian Open. After that, the Russian had a rather long series of competitions, during which he could not win more than one match, but more often he even lost at the start. And only during the July soil things went better for Karatsev. Perhaps the collaboration with the famous Russian coach Boris Sobkin, who worked with Mikhail Youzhny for a long time, brought results. In Bostad, Aslan reached the 1/4 finals, defeating Italian Lorenzo Sonego and Frenchman Yugo Gaston, and in Hamburg he also reached this stage, defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia and Colombian Daniel-Elai Galan. It is curious that in both cases Karatsev was stopped by the Argentinean Francisco Serundolo.

First Russian title of the season! Aslan Karatsev defeated Iron Man in Sydney

Lajovic immediately surprised Karatsev with an excellent game on his serve. At times, he even had aces. But the main thing is that the Russian never got close to the break points in the starting set. But the Serb’s first chances for someone else’s pitch appeared in the 6th game. True, he did not use them. And when it seemed that a tie-break could not be avoided, Dusan nevertheless made a break – 7:5 in 49 minutes. In the second game, the Russian already achieved his first break point in the 3rd game, but he missed this chance. At the end of the match, Lajovic again made a break and successfully filed for the match – 7:5, 6:3 in 1 hour 31 minutes.

So Karatsev could not reach the 3rd quarterfinal in a row, and thus there were no Russians left in the ATP-250 tournament in Kitzbuhel. Nevertheless, Aslan is getting closer and closer to the seeding zone at the US Open. Now he is in the 36th place. From the first days of August, the season on American hard has already begun. All tennis players move across the ocean. Returns to the court and the first racket of the world Daniil Medvedev. It will be interesting!
