With 11 wickets in the match of debutant Pravin Jayawickrama, Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 209 runs in the second Test on Monday to win the Test series 1–0. Sri Lanka needed five wickets on the final day to win and Jayawickrama took three of these wickets. The left-arm spinner took 11 wickets for 178 runs in the match.
This is the 10th best performance by a Test bowler while making his debut. This is the best performance by a Sri Lankan bowler. Jayawickrama left behind Akila Dhananjay, who took eight wickets for 44 runs against Bangladesh three years ago. Bangladesh, chasing the target of 437 runs, lost their last three wickets in eight balls, which reduced the team to 227 runs in the second innings.
In the second over in the morning, Man of the Match Jayawickrama trapped Litton Das (17) and then took the last two wickets within three balls to take five wickets for 86 runs in the innings. The left-arm spinner also took six wickets for 92 runs in the first innings. Off-spinner Ramesh Mendis also took four wickets for 103 runs.
Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne was adjudged the best player of the series for scoring 428 runs in three innings, including a double century, a century and a half-century. The first test of the series was a draw.
Sri Lanka scored 493 runs in the first innings and 194 runs in the second innings. On the other hand, Bangladesh scored 251 runs in the first innings. Sri Lanka’s team did not perform well in the Test. The team had lost 0-2 to England in their home country. Sri Lanka now has to visit Bangladesh.
