Cherchesov defeated another opponent in the Champions League! Powerful comeback at the right time
The return match with Slovan turned out to be equal and tense, but ended with an unexpected score.
There are no Russian teams in the Champions League, but there is a coach! Stanislav Cherchesov and his “Ferencvaros” lost to “Slovan” a week ago and came to Slovakia to take revenge. The return match of the 2nd qualifying round gave the plot for the movie.
In the first minutes, football faded into the background. The players of both teams were alarmed by the collision of two 17th numbers: the Czech defender of Slovan Yuri Medvedev flew into a tackle, and Eldar Civic accidentally knocked him in the head with his knee. Doctors fussed over the hosts’ player for several minutes and eventually carried him off the field to the applause of the fans. The rival of Ferencváros had to make a forced substitution.
And when the game resumed, it turned out that both teams lacked composure. Slovan and Ferencvaros acted frankly chaotically, made mistakes in passes and, in general, allowed a lot of marriage. In addition, due to the haste and lack of accuracy, the players often went into hard joints.
And in the middle of the half went goals. True, only from Cherchesov’s team. In the 20th minute, Ferencvaros, the already mentioned Civic, galloped along the left flank and loaded it to the far post. There better defenders orientated Frank Boli. The striker ran out from behind the backs of the opponents and locked into an empty corner. On the edge, meanwhile, was the classic Cherchesov – zero emotions.
Slovan could quickly level the score, but forgave the opponent. Football karma caught up in a few minutes. Ferencvaros earned a free kick, and everything turned out in his favor. The ball darted around the penalty area, after which Kristoffer Zakariassen plunged his head into the top nine. 0:2. The score brought Cherchesov’s team to the next round, but the Russian coach was absolutely calm here too.
The main feeling in the first half: the game was equal, but Ferencváros turned out to be more decisive. Cherchesov’s team punished the opponent and scored almost more than they created.
In the second half, the game became even tougher and even less meaningful. A vivid example: Slovan midfielder Juraj Kutsk (the one who played for Milan) freaked out and laid down the author of the second goal, Zakariassen. The noble judge did not kill the intrigue and showed the Slovak a yellow card.
Time passed, the score did not change, and the Slovan players realized that it was time to act. The team completely forgot about the defense and rushed forward. For Cherchesov, this was an ideal scenario, but a problem arose: the frenzied implementation of Ferencváros disappeared somewhere. For a few minutes, the guests could make the score devastating, but twice in a row they forgave a desperate opponent.
Justice was restored in the 70th minute – Ferencvaros was punished for squandering. Slovan earned another corner, and captain Vernon De Marco headed under the crossbar without much interference. And four minutes later the trick almost repeated. True, this time he beat Kutsk.
Slovan – Ferencvaros – 1:4
At the end of the match, the teams played as if they were waiting for extra time. But in the 89th minute, Ferencváros still found the strength for the last “explosion”. After a combination and a cross from the right flank, the Slovan defender missed Adam Traore, and the former Barcelona midfielder made it 1:3.
Finally, Ferencvaros scored the fourth. Aissa Laiduni reluctantly went on the counterattack, and when he realized that the referee was not going to blow the final whistle, he discharged the “gun” under the crossbar. 1:4. Cherchesov’s team is in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.
Now Ferencváros will face Qarabag in the third qualifying round. And then, if we manage to get past the Azerbaijani team, there will be a playoff round. The next step is the group stage of the main European Cup. Agree, with Cherchesov the Champions League will only become more interesting!
