Canadian tennis players beat Italians in Billie Jean King Cup group stage
MOSCOW, 10 Nov – Canada’s women’s tennis team beat Italy in the group stage of the Billie Jean King Cup final in Glasgow, Scotland.
Group A meeting ended with the score 3-0. Bianca Andreescu outplayed Elisabetta Cochcharetto – 7:6 (7:3), 6:3, Leila Fernandez inflicted a crushing defeat on Martine Trevisan – 6:0, 6:0. In the doubles meeting, Gabriela Dabrowski and Fernandez defeated Lucia Bronzetti and Jasmine Paolini – 6:1, 6:1.
On Friday, the Canadian team will play with the Swiss. The Italian team finished the tournament without winning a single victory.
The current winner of the tournament is the Russian team. In early March, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) suspended the membership of the Russian Tennis Federation and the Belarusian Tennis Federation, tennis players from these countries were suspended from participating in the Billie Jean King Cup. Russian athletes have the right to take part in tournaments of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in a neutral status.
