MOSCOW, 19 Jul – Member of the Sports Committee of the State Duma Roman Teryushkov said that athletes from Russia who compete for unfriendly countries should be punished in proportion to the act, despite the fact that changing sports citizenship in this case is betrayal and treason.
Teryushkov wrote in his Telegram channel that he clarifies his position regarding the performances of athletes with Russian citizenship in other countries, noting that the athlete primarily protects and represents the interests of his homeland, stands for the flag, anthem, coat of arms of his country, he is the defender of his country, both in peacetime and in wartime.
“If an athlete has decided to compete for countries from the list of unfriendly countries – those countries that are now supplying lethal weapons to the fascist regime in Ukraine, from which our soldiers and civilians die every day – then I consider the change of Russian sports citizenship to citizenship of these countries a betrayal and treason The punishment should be commensurate with the committed act and may differ from the one established now,” the deputy said.
At the same time, according to him, if an athlete decides to change the sports citizenship of Russia to the citizenship of countries that are not included in the list of unfriendly countries, then it is necessary to establish the rules for the transition.
“This can be done after the sports federation of the country where the athlete is moving compensates for the costs of his training incurred by our state. The calculation procedure should be established by the government, all cost standards are calculated by type of sport and by stages of sports training,” noted deputy.
But if an athlete decides to change sports citizenship of Russia to the citizenship of friendly countries, such as, for example, Belarus, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, DPR, LPR, he can do this freely, while no compensation is paid, Tetyushkov emphasized.
He also noted that he considers it honorable for athletes from other countries to play for Russia.
In addition, Teryushkov said that at the moment a special military operation is underway and the soldiers of the Russian Federation are fulfilling a sacred duty to protect the world from “fascism that has flourished” on the territory of Ukraine.

“These guys should not be forced to love our Motherland. However, in the mode of hostilities, appropriate steps are required and the president signed a law on tougher punishment for going over to the side of the enemy in an armed conflict or participating in hostilities against Russia,” the parliamentarian also noted.
