MOSCOW, 8 Aug – The African Confederation of Football (CAF) has called on the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to open a disciplinary investigation in connection with the comments of Italian Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis, according to the CAF website.
De Laurentiis had previously said he was refusing to sign African players as they could join their national teams in the African Cup of Nations in the middle of the season, which would interfere with the club. Otherwise, African players must sign a withdrawal document in the middle of the club season.
“CAF is appalled by the irresponsible and unacceptable statements made by Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis about African players and the African Cup of Nations. Having publicly stated that players signed with Napoli must sign an African Cup of Nations waiver as a condition of employment, comments De Laurentiis is likely to fall under Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations and CAF therefore calls on UEFA to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him,” CAF said in a statement.
At the moment, “Napoli” is represented by four players who have the citizenship of African countries. Among them, the club’s top scorer last season and the most expensive transfer in the club’s history, Nigerian Victor Osimhen.
