MOSCOW, 22 Jul – The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation (LHF) has rejected the move of goalkeeper Janis Kalnins to Amur Khabarovsk, according to the organisation’s website.
An application to transfer Kalniņš to the transfer system of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) was submitted to the LHF this week. After that, LHF blocked the deal.
In April, the Latvian Seimas adopted amendments to the law on sports, according to which athletes and coaches are prohibited from participating in competitions held in Russia and Belarus. In July, LHF general secretary Roberts Plžejs said that Kalnins would be denied further call-up to the Latvian national team due to the signing of a contract with the KHL club.
Kalniņš took part in four World Championships and the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing as part of the national team. In the KHL, he previously represented Dynamo Riga and Jokerit Helsinki. In total, the athlete played 199 matches in the league, in which he scored 95 victories (15 – without missed goals).
