Sport: MLS clubs are ready to pay Messi part of the salary together to move to the league
MOSCOW, 27 Mar – Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs are ready to jointly pay Argentine striker Lionel Messi part of the salary if he continues his career in the North American tournament, according to sport.es.
Inter Miami, who are looking to sign the Paris Saint-Germain striker, are unable to sign the player due to MLS financial constraints, according to a source. At a team owners meeting about six weeks ago, an agreement was reached that the clubs would jointly pay part of Messi’s salary, with the Argentine deciding where he would play in MLS.
Club owners believe that the transfer of Messi will increase profits from the sale of television rights. Also, the Argentinean will help popularize football in the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021, joining the Paris club on a free transfer after his contract with Barcelona expired. The 35-year-old Argentine’s deal with the Parisians expires at the end of the current season. Messi is a seven-time winner of the Golden Ball.
