MOSCOW, 25 Jul – The Council of the World Athletics Association (World Athletics) approved the introduction of a repechage round in all individual types of athletics at distances from 200 to 1500 meters, including hurdles, according to the official website of the organization.
With the new format, all athletes who fail to qualify in the first round will have a second chance to advance to the semi-finals. This system will replace the previous one, which saw athletes advance to the semi-finals with the fastest time in addition to those who qualified in the first round.
The competition will consist of four rounds: first, repechage, semi-final and final. Each athlete who will take part in competitions that include a repechage round will run a minimum of two heats.
At a distance of 100 meters there are already preliminary races, a repechage round is not provided for in this type of competition. Also, this format will not be used for long distances, as the need for proper recovery between rounds makes it impractical.
The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
